Xiaohongshu is a search engine too: start with the terms your buyers use

The short answer

Xiaohongshu says it has more than 400 million monthly active users and more than 800 million searches a day (disclosed May 2026, the platform’s own figures). Buyers often search by category, use case, problem or comparison, not brand name. Start with a map of those terms, then check whether your account name, bio and recent posts reflect them.

What the platform has said

In May 2026 Xiaohongshu publicly stated that monthly active users had passed 400 million and daily searches exceeded 800 million. These are the platform’s own disclosures, reported by several Chinese media outlets, and have not been independently audited. We don’t know how the platform ranks content, and nothing here should be read as a claim about ranking.

Why it matters for a brand account

Many international brands treat Xiaohongshu as a place to post well-designed images. A buyer who is searching, however, arrives with a need. They type a category (“home coffee machine recommendations”), a use case (“for a dorm”), a problem (“how to clean it”) or a comparison (“capsule or semi-automatic”). If an account and its posts only speak in brand terms, it is easier to miss.

A search-term map: five types

  1. Category terms: what the product is.

  2. Use-case terms: where and when it is used.

  3. Problem terms: what the buyer is trying to fix or avoid.

  4. Comparison terms: how the buyer weighs options.

  5. Brand terms: the brand and product names.

The terms above are illustrative examples, not search data.

Where the terms go

Account name and bio, post titles, the opening lines of the post, cover text and tags. We don’t claim that any of these positions raises reach; they are where a buyer who found the post would look to decide whether it answers the question.

A five-question check

  1. Search your category term. Does your brand appear?

  2. Does your bio use words buyers search for?

  3. Which term type does each of your last 10 posts address?

  4. What do comments and direct messages ask?

  5. Update the term list monthly.

What we can’t say

We don’t have search data for any specific category, and we don’t know how the platform ranks content. This is a method for planning content, not a promise of reach, enquiries or sales.

FAQ

Do buyers really search on Xiaohongshu?

The platform says daily searches exceed 800 million (May 2026, its own figure). That doesn’t tell us how many are about your category.

Should I just add keywords to every post?

No. The aim is to answer the buyer’s question in plain language. We don’t claim keywords raise reach.

How is this different from SEO?

Different platform and unknown ranking rules. We treat it as a content-planning method.
